Hoodia has been used for thousands of years by the San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert to counter hunger and thirst on hunting trips. Hoodia has been studied by many scientists the past few years to determine what ingredients of hoodia are responsible for this effect on the appetite. Most of the study has focused on an active ingredient called P57 which is now believed to be the main active ingredient of hoodia. In laboratory animal test scientist discovered that animals with P57 injections resulted in dramatic reductions of food intake. Brown researchers believe that P57 is active in the hypothalamus which is a brain structure that controls numerous drives in the body such as appetite, sex, sleep and mood. It is believed that additional P57 is able to increase ATP (energy compound) levels which cause the hypothalamus to signal the brain the stop eating. P57 seems to work like just like glucose which boosts ATP levels and reduces appetite. The difference is that P57 has no calories. Many clinical studies are currently being done to determine the effectiveness and safety of hoodia. The initial results are very positive and seem to indicate that hoodia could be a very valuable tool as an appetite suppressant.
